VALLEY GLEN — No. 14 College of the Canyons made quick work of L.A. Valley College in a 12-2 conference road win on Thursday.
The win was the third in the last four games for Canyons (11-4, 5-2) but the first in the last week after having multiple games postponed due to inclement weather. It's the club's fifth victory to come in a run-rule shortened result.
COC scored an unearned run in the first then added to that advantage with runs in each of the first four innings.
Gigi Garcia recorded her first of three doubles in the second inning to plate a run and Lily Baggot tripled in two more to put her mark on the third inning. Alyssa Silva, the current COC-student-Athlete of the Week, doubled home Garcia in the fourth to put the Lady Cougars ahead 5-0.
L.A. Valley (3-17, 1-6) scored its only two runs of the game on a two-run shot from Violeta Espinosa that briefly made it a tight ballgame at 5-2.
After a scoreless fifth inning Canyons rallied for seven runs in the sixth highlighted by a two-run home run by Julia Fuentes, her team-leading third of the season. Silva, Baggot and Valery Ramirez all notched RBIs in the inning.
COC starter Lexy Angulo (4-1) earned the win after scattering five hits, including two-run home run. She walked three and struck out four in her six innings of work.
