Lady Cougars Win Third Straight 13-8 Over Bakersfield

College of the Canyons won its third straight conference game 13-8 over Bakersfield College at Whitten Field on Tuesday behind a gutsy pitching performance from freshman Nichole Muro and 16 hits from the Lady Cougars' lineup.
The victory was the fifth in the last six games for COC (11-12, 2-2) which continues to inch closer to the .500 mark. Canyons also improved its home record to 8-6 on the season while dealing Bakersfield (14-9, 1-1) a fourth straight loss. The Lady Cougars have scored 13 runs in each of the team's last three victories.
Muro's performance in the circle came less than 24 hours after she pitched all but one inning in helping COC split its non-conference doubleheader vs. Cuesta College on Monday. Despite being tagged for six runs in a shaky sixth inning, the freshman hurler settled down and held the Renegades to just two runs the rest of the way.
That allowed the Lady Cougars to rally with a five-run second inning of its own and keep that momentum with a three-run outburst in the third to move ahead 8-7. COC then added a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to cap another big offensive day.
Canyons recoded four walks to go along with its 16 hits and swiped 10 bases to keep the pressure on Bakersfield all afternoon. Lily Baggot was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day leading a group of five players that recorded multi-hit games. Kate Garcia and Gigi Garcia both finished with three hits in the game.
Muro (5-6) was charged with seven earned runs but picked up the win. She recorded a pair of strikeouts and issued three walks while facing 34 batters.
Serenity Angulo (2-2) took the loss for Bakersfield after lasting just 1 and 2/3 innings and surrendering five runs. Canyons also did damage on relief pitcher Ryleigh Harrison who allowed eight runs in her 4 and 1/3 innings of work.
