CYPRESS — No. 15 College of the Canyons was eliminated from postseason play after a two-game skid at No. 2 Cypress College during the first round of the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs on Saturday.
Canyons (17-26) had previously defeated No. 18 Cuesta College in the postseason bracket's play-in round on April 30.
In the series opener COC took a 1-0 lead on an infield error that allowed Ryan Shepherd to score the first run of the game.
Cypress (35-7) tied the game at 1-1 in the home half of the first before seeing Canyons retake the lead at 2-1on an RBI single from Lexy Angulo that scored Lily Baggot and proved to be the final run of the series for COC.
The Chargers plated two runs to move ahead 3-2 and then added four more in the fifth. An inning later, Cypress' two-run fifth inning proved enough for the 9-2 final score.
Nichole Muro (9-15) took the loss for her three innings of work. She surrendered just two hits but walked eight baters and was tagged for seven earned runs. Angulo pitched the final three innings, allowing a pair of runs on two hits and a pair of walks.
COC recorded just six hits in the game vs. Cypress starter Kaitlyn Reynolds who lasted six and 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
The following day Reynolds was back in the circle for a shortened five-inning affair in which she surrendered just one hit while striking out five batters in a 9-0 Chargers victory.
Shepherd's double down the right field line in the fourth represented the lone hit for Canyons.
Angulo started the game and took the loss after lasting one and 2/3 innings. She was charged with nine runs, eight earned, on six hits and three walks. Muro bounced back to pitch two and 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, however, the Canyons lineup was never able to get back into the game.
Cypress will next host No. 7 Orange Coast College (27-13) in the second round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
