Phillip Wong and Brandi Tyson Lead Cougars In Third Conference Meet
The College of the Canyons men’s and women’s swim and dive teams finished in third and fifth place, respectively, on Friday afternoon at Santa Barbara City College.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The College of the Canyons men's and women's swim and dive teams finished in third and fifth place, respectively, on Friday afternoon at Santa Barbara City College.
The men's team captured 55 points and came in behind first-place Cuesta College (184) and second-place Santa Monica College (140). The women turned in 46 points. Santa Barbara won the five-team competition with 164 points, followed by Cuesta College (125).
Phillip Wong three top-four finishes in the meet. Wong came in second place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:57.42, third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.42) and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.87). Neil La Plant also fared well for COC after coming in third in the 50-yard freestyle (25.10) and fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Luke Wessellhoff was the only male diver who participated on Friday and garnered 18 points for COC.
Brandi Tyson came in second place in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 12:38.71, for seven points. She also turned in a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Johannah Gonzalez took third place in the 50-yard freestyle (27.99) and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:12.93). Monica Hamilton took fifth place in the 100-yard freestyle (1:03.66) for four points and seventh place in the 100-yard freestyle (1:18.51), good for two points.
Peighton Hall swept the 1 and 3-meter diving competitions. She turned in 158.25 points in the one-meter dive and 139.50 in the three-meter dive.
Canyons will participate in the WSC/SoCal Dive Finals on Friday, April 11-12 at El Camino College.
