Cougars Swim at Annual Mt. SAC Invitational

WALNUT — The Cougars' swim teams hit the deck at the annual Mt. San Antonio College Invitational held Feb. 20-22 at the Mounties' Aquatic Center.

Top performers for COC's men's squad included Shallen De Zilwa who placed third in the 50-yard backstroke at a pace of 27.62. The freshman was also sixth in the 50-yard butterfly after being clocked at 25.81.

Sophomore Tim Lim saw his first action of the young season and checked in with a third-place time of 22.00 in the 50-yard freestyle.

Freshman Jacob Gibbs took sixth in the same event at 22.39, and was also sixth in the 50-yard backstroke at 28.44. Joshua Lusk was eighth in the 50-yard backstroke at 28.89.

The Cougars were seventh in the 13-team field with 251 event points. Mt. SAC (917) won the event with Orange Coast College (749) and El Camino College (547) in the top three.

Freshman Mikaela Martinez led the Lady Cougars with a pair of second-place finishes in the 50-yard butterfly (29.60) and 200-yard butterfly (2:25.34). 

Sophomore Kaley Gregory placed third in the 50-yard backstroke at a time of 30.92 and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle at 26.82.

Arianna Werner scored in the 200-yard freestyle after being clocked at 2:12.97, good for seventh place. 

Sierra Young was seventh in the 50-yard breaststroke (36.20) and eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:51.04).

Sierra College (1,281) won the women's meet with Orange Coast (347) a distant second and San Diego Mesa College (324) in third.

COC returns to conference competition on Saturday, Feb. 29 at WSC Meet No. 2 hosted by Cuesta College on San Luis Obispo. Events begin at 11:30 a.m.
