WALNUT, Calif. - The College of the Canyons women's basketball team dropped their season opener to Foothill College, 66-58, in the Cougars' first game of the Mt. SAC Tip-Off tournament.
The Cougars (0-1) were well defended all night, shooting a combined 31 percent (22 of 71) from the floor and finishing the first half with just 19 points before pouring it on in the second half with 39 points to keep it close.
But the Owls (1-0), who were the state runner-ups last season, were too much to overcome, as they out rebounded Canyons on both ends of the floor and limited the Cougars' scoring opportunities.
Cougar freshman forward Ashley Wakefield registered a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while guard Britney Bradley added 12 points and five assists.
