SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons women's basketball team handed fourth-ranked Mt. SAC a big loss on Saturday evening, 73-68.
The win broke COC's 15-game losing streak to the Mounties that lasted seven years. The last time the Cougars won against the Mounties was on Dec. 20, 2002, when COC beat Mt. SAC 76-72 at the Cougar Cage. The win also marked 18-year head coach Greg Herrick's 400th win as the College of the Canyons women's basketball coach.
COC built up a 24-6 lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half, only to see that lead swallowed up by the Mounties who took a 35-22 lead at halftime.
Sophomore Ashley Wakefield added 12 points in the second half of the game, after being held to just six points in the first, to keep pace with the Mounties. COC finally broke away around the five-minute mark and kept the lead until the end of the game.
Kelli Lewis lead all scorers with 22 points and eight assists and Ashley Wakefield chipped in 18 points and 14 rebounds in the Cougars' win.
COC will head to the Coast Christmas Classic on Friday, Dec. 18.
