Two College of the Canyons women’s basketball players have signed letters of intent with four-year universities.
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Two College of the Canyons women's basketball players have signed letters of intent with four-year universities. Sophomore guard Ashley Wakefield has signed with the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., and sophomore forward Joslynn Frazier has signed with Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz.
Wakefield, the 2010 Western State Conference, South Division Most Valuable Player and recipient of the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) Co-Player of the Year award, averaged 18.6 ppg, 12.9 rpg, and 2.7 spg during the 2009-2010 campaign. The Washington Prep of Los Angeles graduate collected 22 double-doubles in the Cougars' 27-game season.
"She is very deserving of the scholarship," said College of the Canyons head women's basketball coach Greg Herrick. "She has worked very hard the past two years, and her story is a testimony of what you can do in community college. She had no offers out of high school and became the top player in the state."
Wakefield will join former Cougar Arielle White, who transferred to Pacific last season and will be a senior in the upcoming season.
First-team all-conference forward Frazier averaged 14.8 ppg and 11.6 rpg during the 2009-2010 season. The Luther Burbank High School of Sacramento alum helped lead the Cougars to back-to-back perfect conference records from 2008-2010. Frazier scored a season-high 28 points on Jan. 13 against Bakersfield College and also registered 19 double-doubles throughout the season.
"Joslynn was a late bloomer," Herrick said. "She jumped out at the end of the season and upped her game at the right time. I think she has a tremendous upside, and she can be as good as she wants to be. She also understood the value of continuing her education, and it paid off for her."
Wakefield and Frazier are two of 28 players to earn scholarships to four-year universities under Herrick's leadership.
The University of the Pacific is a member of the NCAA Division I Big West Conference. The Tigers finished the 2009-2010 campaign with a record of 6-23 overall and 4-12 in conference.
