COC Drops Game In Final Minutes Against Moorpark College
In a game that came down to the final shot, the College of the Canyons women’s basketball came up short against Moorpark College Saturday afternoon, falling 74-72, at the Cougar Cage.
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – In a game that came down to the final shot, the College of the Canyons women's basketball came up short against Moorpark College Saturday afternoon, falling 74-72, at the Cougar Cage.
Canyons (7-11, 1-2 WSC North) Keiona Mathews missed two three-pointers in the final seven seconds of the game, after leading all-scorers with 28 points. Sophomore guard Shawn Kolani added 13 points and nine assists, while sophomore guard Jennifer Franco logged 10 points. Freshman guard Jordan Oster chipped in 11 points and three steals off the bench.
Canyons came out of the break on a 6-2 run, allowing the Cougars to go up 45-44 with 16:45 left in the game.
Moorpark and Canyons found themselves tied up at 70 at the 1:21 mark with the Cougars in possession of the ball. Mathews dribbled the ball down the middle of the court, to only find a Raider who stole the ball from her. With only a 1:02 left in the game, COC was forced to foul.
Moorpark made both free throws and COC quickly responded with a Nayiri Aslanian layup with 38 seconds left in the game.
After a Moorpark timeout, Moorpark's Sydney Perry hit a layup, allowing COC to have 17 seconds to score but Mathews missed two jumpers in the final seconds.
Canyons shot 31.6 percent (25-79), while Moorpark shot 49.2 percent (29-59). The Cougars had 14 steals in the loss and scored 24 points off turnovers.
College of the Canyons will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 22 as they travel to Cuesta for a 5 p.m. match up.
