The 2014 East Los Angeles College Husky tournament got off to a dramatic start on Saturday as College of the Canyons (9-4) outlasted Harbor (6-5) 60-59 to earn the win.
COC sophomore guard Qimmah Russo was fouled on a three-point attempt with 0.8 seconds left in the game with the score knotted up at 59. Russo missed the first two free throw attempts before regaining her composure and sinking the third to give the Cougars the one-point win.
In the victory, Russo scored a team-high 20 points for the Cougars. Sophomore Lizeth Guzman came off the bench to score 11 and grab 15 boards for Canyons, while Monica Friedl had a game high 17 boards for the Cougars.
Canyons will next face tourney host East L.A. in the tourney semi-finals at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
