The College of the Canyons women's basketball team defeated L.A. Trade-Tech College 73-61 on Monday, to claim third place at the annual East L.A. Husky Tournament.
Canyons (10-5) led by just two points at halftime, but opened up the second half by using an early 15-5 run to go up by double digits for the first time.
L.A. Trade-Tech (7-5) would cut the deficit down to eight with 9:18 to go, but the Cougars quickly pushed it back over 10 and never looked back.
COC sophomore Qimmah Russo had a team high 16 points for the Cougars, while freshman forward Monica Friedl posted 13 points, an impressive 24 rebounds, and three blocks.
As a result Friedl was named to the All-Tournament team.
Canyons will have a short break before beginning the Western State Conference, South schedule with a home contest vs. Antelope Valley at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7.
