The COC women's basketball team clawed its way to a 77-73 win over visiting Santa Monica College in a tight back-and-forth contest on Wednesday.
Canyons led by three at half time, but was forced to contend with a scrappy effort from the Corsairs in the second half.
COC freshman forward Monica Friedl scored a game-high 21 points, while shooting 50 percent from the field. She also pulled down an impressive 19 rebounds.
Fellow freshman forward Hannah Green ranked second for Canyons with 11 points and eight rebounds.
COC forward Amber Evans had 10 points and nine boards.
As a team, Canyons shot 45.3 percent from the field, compared to Santa Monica's mark of just 30.7 percent. COC also outrebounded Santa Monica 53-38.
However, COC committed 32 turnovers in the game, which allowed the Corsairs to keep pace.
Canyons enters the weekend with a 14-10 overall record and 4-5 mark in conference play. COC will next travel to L.A. Valley at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
