Canyons Come Up Short in 82-81 Loss to Contra Costa

VENTURA, Calif. — A huge game from College of the Canyons sophomore Monica Friedl wasn't enough to give the Lady Cougars a victory against Contra Costa College on Saturdayas Canyons came up short, losing 82-81 in a heartbreaker on the second day of the Ventura-Kiwanis Tournament hosted by Ventura College.
Friedl tallied her second double-double – 28 points and 12 rebounds – of the season in the one-point loss. The sophomore forward also connected on an impressive 12-of-20 shots and finished with three blocks and two steals.
The Lady Cougars shot well throughout the game hitting on 46.8 percent of their field goal attempts while holding Contra Costa to only 33.7 percent shooting.
Contra Costa, however, outrebounded COC 53-30 throughout the game and had an advantage at the free throw line making 20-of-30 free throws while Canyons only took 10, making seven of them.
COC sophomore forward Hannah Green added 10 points, five rebounds and five blocks off the bench. She also shot 5-of-6 from the field.
Sophomore guard Vikki Martinez also had a solid performance off the bench scoring nine points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Head coach Greg Herrick and the Lady Cougars will look to rebound at the Solano Showdown hosted by Solano Community College Dec. 11-13.
