No. 8 Lady Cougars Return Home, Win Eighth Straight Game

The College of the Canyons women's basketball team continues to dominate its opponents, as the Lady Cougars captured their eighth straight game — and 10th in the last 11 games — with a 99-52 conference victory over visiting Glendale College on Wednesday.

COC head coach Greg Herrick and the No. 8 regionally ranked Lady Cougars are now 13-4 on the season and 3-0 vs. Western State Conference, South opponents.

Much of the team's early season success has been due to the dynamic play of six-foot-inch sophomore forwards Monica Friedl and Hannah Green, who have helped pace Canyons on both ends of the floor.

Entering Wednesday's contest Friedl, a Canyon High School graduate, was averaging a double-double on the season with 19.8 points and 11.6 rebounds per contest. Those totals place Friedl second in the conference in scoring and third in rebounding. She also ranks first and second on the team, respectively, in those categories.

Meanwhile, Green, a West Ranch High School product, entered Wednesday night averaging 13.3 rebounds per game to lead Canyons in that category and also rank third in the state.

Green is the team's second leading scorer at 11.5 points per game while shooting a team-high 53.1 percent from the floor. Her six blocks per game are also the state's top mark.

On Jan. 6, Green swatted away an impressive 15 shots in the WSC opener vs. Santa Monica to break the COC women's basketball program's single game blocks record. The previous mark of 12 blocks was set by Zevette Mitchell in 1997.

Prior to that feat, Green scored 21 points and pulled down 27 rebounds — three shy of the program record — in the championship game of the East L.A. Husky Classic held Dec. 27-29.

On Wednesday, it was more of the same as COC's dynamic duo combined for 44 points and 31 rebounds.

Friedl led all scorers with 24 points on a 9-of-15 shooting night, adding a game-high 18 rebounds and four blocks for good measure.

Not to be outdone, Green finished the game with 20 points and 13 rebounds, narrowly missing a triple-double by finishing with eight blocks.

Sophomore guard Tamara Smith added 13 points off the bench.

Canyons committed just nine turnovers in the contest, compared to 24 for Glendale. COC also won the battle of the boards 50-27.

The Lady Cougars will next travel to Citrus College at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16.
