Stats Don’t Lie, Lady Cougars Have Two of the State’s Best
COC sophomores Hannah Green and Monica Friedl are among the state's top players.
When the No. 6 ranked College of the Canyons women's basketball team takes the floor vs. L.A. Valley on Saturday afternoon, head coach Greg Herrick's lineup will feature two of the best players in the state.
The first place Lady Cougars are in the midst of a 10-game win streak, having improved their record to 15-4 and a perfect 5-0 vs. Western State Conference (WSC), South opponents.
Included during that impressive streak have been several eye-popping statistical performances turned in by COC sophomore forwards Hannah Green and Monica Friedl.
Friedl, who leads the team in scoring, has posted double-digit point totals in all but one game this season, while grabbing at least 18 rebounds in four straight games.
In fact, the Canyon High School graduate is averaging a double-double on the season with 19.6 points and 12.7 rebounds per contest — good enough to rank second in the conference in both categories.
Friedl also ranks sixth in the state in rebounding and 10th in scoring.
Meanwhile, Green, a West Ranch High School product, is leading the state in blocks at 6.3 per game.
Green has posted double-digit shot block totals in two games already this season and will enter Saturday's game just 12 blocks shy of matching the program's all-time record of 131 set by Kerri Garland during the 1994-95 season.
Green's 13.3 rebounds per game also lead the conference, while her 53.9 field goal percentage ranks her second in the WSC. She has posted nine consecutive double-double stat lines, and averages 12.7 points per game.
Canyons will tip off vs. L.A. Valley at 3 p.m. on Saturday, in the Cougar Cage.
