No. 6 Canyons Clinches WSC South Championship on 17th Straight Win
The title is the COC women's basketball program's 15th overall WSC, South championship.
CULVER CITY, Calif. — The No. 6 ranked College of the Canyons women's basketball team defeated West L.A. College 85-70 on Saturday night to clinch a Western State Conference, South championship and extend its win streak to 17 straight games.
This marks the first WSC, South title for the Lady Cougars and head coach Greg Herrick since the 2011-12 season when Canyons shared the crown with Bakersfield College. This time around though, they'll be no sharing as COC has clinched the title with two games remaining in the regular season.
This is the COC women's basketball program's 15th overall WSC, South title.
COC's current winning streak of 17 games is the program's longest since the 2009-10 season when head coach Greg Herrick's team won 19 in a row.
On Saturday, Canyons trailed the Wildcats by five points after the first quarter but quickly turned it around by outscoring West L.A. the rest of the way to take a seven-point lead into the half.
Monica Friedl's 24 points and 16 rebounds were a major factor in Canyons coming away with the victory.
Hannah Green nearly recorded another triple-double with 17 points, 19 rebounds and seven blocks, which only added to West L.A.'s struggles.
COC freshman guard Marina Rojas netted a season-high 23 points on a 9-of-13 shooting performance. She also dished out nine assists and had a steal.
With two games left in the regular season, the Cougars' have already clinched the Western State Conference, South championship and upped their overall record to 22-4 and 12-0 against conference opponents.
Canyons will next travel to L.A. Valley College at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17.
