No. 6 Canyons Has 17-Game Streak Snapped at L.A. Valley
COC has now won 20 of its last 22 contests dating back to Dec. 11, 2015, having already clinched the 2015-16 Western State Conference, South championship and a postseason berth.
The No. 6 College of the Canyons women's basketball team had its 17-game win streak snapped in a 64-41 road loss to host L.A. Valley College on Wednesday night.
Prior to Wednesday's loss the Lady Cougars had not been defeated since Dec. 17.
COC has also won 20 of its last 22 contests dating back to Dec. 11. Canyons has already clinched the 2015-16 Western State Conference, South championship and a postseason berth.
The Monarchs started the game by jumping out to an 11-0 lead over Canyons. There was no offensive answer for the Lady Cougars as the team combined to just shot 20 percent from the field compared to a mark just north of 40 percent for LAVC.
COC simply couldn't recover from that early deficit.
Despite the loss, sophomore Hannah Green continued to dominate on the defensive end with 11 rebounds and a game-high 13 blocks. Green also added seven points.
Sophomore Monica Friedl finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
COC freshman Marina Rojas led the way with a team-high 15 points and two steals.
Canyons (22-5, 12-1) will return home at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, when Antelope Valley College (14-14, 9-4) visits the Cougar Cage for the season finale.
The College of the Canyons women's basketball team will be honoring its sophomore players with a brief pre-game 'Sophomore Night Ceremony.'
