Canyons Opens Season 3-0, Herrick Sits at 594 Career Wins
The Cougars picked up victories over Butte, L.A. Southwest and Ohlone College over the weekend as COC head coach Greg Herrick moved to 594 careers wins at the college.

SANTA BARBARA — College of the Canyons has started the 2021-22 season a perfect 3-0 after an exciting three-game run at the Santa Barbara City College MXTE Tourney held Nov. 5-7.
The three victories bring COC head coach Greg Herrick's career total to 594, as the 30-year leader of the program continues his march toward 600 career wins.
Canyons began the weekend with a tight 68-63 victory vs. Butte College (0-1), which had entered the tourney as the No. 7 ranked team in the Northern California region. COC was not ranked to begin the season.
The Cougars were led by freshman LuLu Salloom who poured in 30 points to go with 13 rebounds and five assists. She was 13-of-19 from the field and also added two steals.
COC freshman Monique Febles finished with 15 points, four assists and five rebounds and sophomore Justice Walters had 10 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Canyons received just 11 points from is bench but shot a combined 41.7 percent from the field. The difference in the game, however, came at the foul line with COC converting on 17-of-24 from the charity stripe, compared to a 12-of-20 mark from Butte.
In the weekend's second contest, the Cougars erupted for a convincing 103-10 victory over L.A. Southwest College (0-2). The Cougars allowed just four points across the first two quarters as L.A. Southwest converted on just 3-of-30 attempts in the game.
Meanwhile, Canyons had five players score in double figures with Sallomm once again leading the way to the tune of 17 points and seven rebounds.
Febles was next with 13 points, with Danni Diaz and Walters each finishing with 12 points. Natalie Satamian added 11 points to the effort with four assists.
Gabriella Montoya recorded a game-high seven assists followed by Malia Semana with six.
Canyons closed out the weekend trip with 79-66 advantage over Ohlone College (1-2). This time it was sophomore Diamyn Davis who shined brightest for Canyons with 20 points.
Salloom was active once again with 16 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Diaz and Walters rounded out the high scorers with 10 points apiece.
Febles added another eight assists to her season totals to go with seven points.
Canyons is next in action Thursday, Nov. 18 vs. Napa Valley at the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions hosted by Ventura College. Action is scheduled to tip at 8 p.m. The Cougars will then play on Friday and Saturday with opponents and start times determined by bracket results.
