Canyons Battles Back, But Falls to Bakersfield

College of the Canyons closed out the opening round of conference play with a 55-37 home loss to Bakersfield College on Wednesday.
Canyons (4-17, 0-7) got off to a slow start but was outscored by just two points in the second half and also managed to win the battle of the fourth by a seven-point margin.
Mia Ceja, the current Jersey Mike's student-athlete of the week, was the Cougars leading scorer with 11 points to go with three rebounds, two assists and a trio of steals.
Sami Rodriguez started the game and established a new season high with eight points alongside three rebounds. Vivianna Alvarado was the team leader with nine rebounds and also scored eight points.
Syrai Piper finished with four points and five rebounds with an assist and a steal. Alissa Saridin pulled down seven boards with three assists, two steals and five points.
The Cougars were limited to just a seven-player rotation with all but one point coming from the starting five. Canyons shot better than 41 percent in the fourth quarter, its best mark of the game, but struggled to try and overcame the Renegade advantage.
Bakersfield (6-15, 2-5) had three players in double figures with Kilah Monje and Isabel Acevez leading the way at 16 points. The Renegades also benefitted from 22 COC turnovers in the game.
Canyons is back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 with a road trip to Antelope Valley College.
