Canyons Takes Fourth Straight Conference Event as Menendez Medals

VAN NUYS — College of the Canyons remained undefeated and freshman Carla Menendez took her turn as event medalist, as the Cougars walked away with a 15-stroke victory at the Western State Conference (WSC) neutral event at Woodley Lakes Golf Course on Monday.
Menendez carded a two-over round of 74 to lead the field of 32 players. She had previously finished in the top-five of the individual standing on two occasions, including a runner-up result at the WSC event hosted by Moorpark at Los Robles Greens on Sept. 26.
COC freshmen Motoko Shimoji and Flora Peugnet both finished their day at 78 to tie with two others for fourth place in the individual standings. Shimojo had earned medalist honors in the first three events if the season before giving way to Menendez on Monday.
Brooke Maxwell also played well for Canyons, slotting into a tie for eighth place to round out the Cougars' scoring.
COC tallied a four-player score of 314 to finish ahead Santa Barbara City College (329) and Bakersfield (333) in the top three spots. Moorpark (353), Allan Hancock (368) and Citrus (373) rounded out the team scoring, with Antelope Valley College also competing but not factoring into team results.
Canyons has now won the first four WSC events to begin the season and will have a chance to extend that streak to five during the conference event at Antelope Valley Country Club on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Tee time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
