Canyons Wins Again, Remains Perfect in Conference Play

BAKERSFIELD —College of the Canyons turned in another winning effort, this time taking the top spot at Monday's Western State Conference (WSC) event at Rio Bravo Country Club as freshman Carla Menendez took home medalist honors for the fourth time this season.
Canyons won the event with a four-player score of 333 to outpace runner-up Bakersfield College (363) by 30 strokes. Allan Hancock College equaled Antelope Valley College with a round of 389 to tie for third place. Moorpark College (391) and Citrus College (416) came in fifth and sixth, respectively, while Santa Barbara City College did not factor into team scoring.
Menendez finished her day at 80 to slot one stroke ahead of Madison Schafer from Antelope Valley College.
COC freshman Motoko Shimoji shot an 82 to tie with two others for third place status.
Brooke Maxwell was next for Canyons, with the freshman following up her medalist round from a week ago with another strong round of 85 to place sixth in the field of 33.
Flora Peugnet rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with her score of 86, which tied for seventh place.
Emma Tyni placed 18th with a score of 99 but had her round dropped from the final tally. Same for Ashley Cortez who was 27th after finishing at 103.
The Cougars will enter the two-day WSC Championship event with a perfect 42-0 record vs. conference opponents, having won every event this season.
Shimoji currently leads the conference individual standings with Menendez not far behind in second place.
Canyons will tee off at the WSC Championships being held at Buenaventura Golf Course beginning Wednesday, Oct. 26. Day two action will resume Monday, Oct. 31.
The Cougars will be shooting for the program's 11th WSC championship and first since 2019.
