Canyons Brings Home Program's 11th Conference Title, Menendez is WSC Player of the Year

VENTURA — College of the Canyons capped its undefeated run vs. conference competition on Monday, finishing the season a perfect 54-0 to win the program's 11th Western State Conference (WSC) title at Buenaventura Golf Course. 

Canyons finished the event with a two-day score of 633 (313/320) after continuing the conference finals tournament that begin on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Monday's round of 320 was 10 strokes better than conference runner-up Bakersfield College (664-334/330). Moorpark College (694-354/340) was the conference's third place winner.

COC freshman Carla Menendez was named the WSC Player of the Year after another spectacular outing. Menendez shot a three-over-par round of 75 on Monday, with that score coming on the heels of her score of 68 in the tourney's first round. Menendez earned medalist honors in five conference events this season.

Motoko Shimoji tied Menendez with a round of 75 on Monday, taking her two-day total to 152 (77/75).

Flora Peugnet finished the conference finals at 165 (83/82) and Brooke Maxwell rounded out the scoring for Canyons at 173 (85/88). 

Emma Tyni (193-100/93) and Ashley Cortez (197-95/102) did not count towards the final COC scores.

Shimoji, Peugnet and Maxwell all earned All-WSC honors for the Cougars. COC head coach Gary Peterson was named the conference Coach of the Year.

Canyons will next play at the CCCAA Southern California Championships on Nov. 6-7 at El Prado Golf Course in Chino. COC will be making its 18th appearance at the regional championships.

The top four programs from both the North and South regional events will then compete at the CCCAA State Championships being held Nov. 13-14 at Morro Bay Golf Course.
