Women's Golf Opens Season with Conference Win in San Dimas

SAN DIMAS — College of the Canyons kicked off the 2023 season on Monday with a Western State Conference (WSC) victory at San Dimas Golf Course, in the conference tourney hosted by Citrus College.
The Cougars posted a four-player score of 334, with Bakersfield College 14 strokes behind in second (348) and Moorpark College in third (356).
Santa Barbara City College settled in fourth (365) with Citrus College in fifth (459). Allan Hancock College and Antelope Valley College both competed but were not scored as a team.
COC sophomore Motoko Shimoji was quick to remind the field of 29 of her aptitude on the fairways, claiming medalist honors with her round of two-over-par (74). Shimoji finished three strokes ahead of Citrus' Isabelle Olivas-Lowell.
Sophomore Flora Peugnet worked for a round of 83 to finish sixth overall. Next for Canyons was Nisha Gaulke, only four strokes back at 87 to finish in eighth place.
Brooke Maxwell finished her day with a round of 90, placing the sophomore in the 11th spot where she was closely followed by COC freshman Emma Ortuno-Montalban in a tie for 12th at 92.
Ortuno-Montalban joined freshman Linnéa Nilsson (113) in having their scores dropped from the final COC team tally.
The Cougars are back in action for the second WSC tournament of the season Monday, Sept. 11 at Santa Barbara Golf Course. Tee-time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
