VENTURA — The Lady Cougars returned to their winning ways at the Western State Conference (WSC) tourney at Olivas Links Golf Course on Monday, with Canyons carrying a four-stroke lead over runner-up Santa Barbara City College.

COC has now won three of the first four conference events to begin the season. Monday's victory restored Canyons to the top spot after having finished runner-up in the team standings the week prior.

Led by a second-place individual result from sophomore Motoko Shimoji, the Lady Cougars carded a four-plater score of 334 ahead of second place SBCC at 338. Moorpark College was a close third at 340 followed by Bakersfield College at 364.

Shimoji's round left her one shot back of medalist honors, with that accolade going to Lisette Orellana of Moorpark.

COC sophomore Flora Peugnet placed seventh overall with her score of 81. Fellow sophomore Brooke Maxwell finished in a tie for 14th place with a round of 88 and Elena Ortuno-Montalban was the last player to score after shooting an 89, good for 16th place. Ortuno-Maltalban's round represented her lowest of the year.

Nisha Gaulke was 17th overall with a round of 91 and Linnéa Nilsson ended at 107 to slot into the 28th spot. Both players had their scores dropped from the final Canyons team total.

WSC play continues Monday, Oct. 2 at Antelope Valley Country Club in the conference event hosted by Antelope Valley College. Tee time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
