Canyons Second After Day One at 3C2A SoCal Championships

SIMI VALLEY — College of the Canyons finished the opening round of the 3C2A Southern California Championships second in the field of 10 competing programs from across the region.
The Lady Cougars carded a four-player score of 330 at Simi Hills Golf Course to trail tourney leader Mt. San Antonio College at 315. Moorpark College and Fullerton College tied for the third spot in rounding out the field's top-four teams.
College of the Desert (342) and Bakersfield (342) tied for the fifth spot with Santa Barbara City College (350) close behind in seventh. Orange Coast College (358), Saddleback (360) and Cuyamaca (384) were next in the team standings.
Sophomore Motoko Shimoji was the top finisher for Canyons with her two-over par round of 74, placing her eighth in the individual standings. Flora Peugnet was 14th with a score of 80.
Nisha Gaulke (87-T27th) and Brooke Maxwell (89-30th) rounded the COC top four. Elena Ortuno-Montalban (91-33th), the college's current Athlete of the Week, was not far off the pace but had her score scratched.
Canyons continues the two-day 3C2A Southern California Championships on Monday Nov. 6 at Simi Hills Golf Course. Tee time is scheduled for 9 a.m. on both days.
The top four teams from the SoCal Regional will advance to the 3C2A State Championships being played Nov. 12-13 at Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles.
