Canyons Places Third, Kitabatake Finishes Runner-Up

BAKERSFIELD — College of the Canyons placed third in a third straight Western State Conference (WSC) tournament on Monday, carding a four-player score of 391 at Rio Bravo Country Club.

Moorpark College (323) won its sixth straight WSC event followed by runner-up Santa Barbara City College (333), Canyons (391), Allan Hancock (404) and Antelope Valley College (475) in the team standings. Bakersfield College and Citrus College entered individual golfers in the event but did not factor into team standings.

COC freshman Sahya Kitabatake led Canyons with a three-over-par round of 75 to tie with Annie Betts of SBCC for runner-up status. Kitabatake has finished no worse than second through the first six WSC tournaments.

Cierra Coia (17th/104), Marianne Meadows (T18th/105) and Valerie Sherman (T20th/107) rounded out the four-player score for Canyons.

Canyons will next play in the WSC tournament hosted by Allan Hancock College at Santa Maria Country Club on Oct. 21.

The two-day WSC Championships are scheduled for Oct. 27-28 at Marshall Canyon Golf Course.
