Canyons Comes Back for 2-1 Playoff Win vs. Saddleback
With its season on the line COC storms back to advance to next round
The No. 3 College of the Canyons women's soccer team defeated visiting No. 14 Saddleback College in a thrilling 2-1 come-from-behind playoff victory on Saturday, to advance to the second round of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) SoCal Regionals.
Canyons (16-2-3) and Saddleback (11-6-4) played to a 0-0 draw through the first half, before eventually surrendering a goal to Gauchos' leading-scorer Danyelle Allen, who netted her 22nd goal of the season in the 56th minute to make it a 1-0 game.
With its season on the line, COC quickly stormed back as freshman midfielder Taylor Sclimenti found the back of the net for an equalizer goal in the 64th minute. Sclimenti's goal was assisted by sophomore midfielder Yesenia Avilez.
Mere moments later in the 66th minute freshman forward Marissa Kneisel found some open field and charged toward the Saddleback zone before finding streaking midfielder Astrid Perez for her fifth goal of the season, and the game winner.
That is all the offense Canyons would need, as the Cougars were able to hold off a tough Gaucho team the rest of the way to get the win.
In the game, COC registered 20 total shots (sevon on goal) compared to just seven total attempts from Saddleback.
Canyons goalkeeper Priscilla Duron made three saves to improve her record to 12-2-2 on the season.
COC head coach Justin Lundin and the Cougars will next host No. 6 Cypress College (13-3-4) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in Cougar Stadium.
Admission to Tuesday's CCCAA Women's Soccer Southern California Regional game is $10 for adults and $7 for COC staff and students with I.D, seniors over 60 and children under 12.
