College of the Canyons erupted for a season-high eight goals in a shutout victory over Allan Hancock College on Tuesday. The win was COC's first on its home field this season.
Canyons (3-6-1) played to a 1-1 draw with No. 4 state ranked Fresno City College in its previous outing, and apaprentky used that momentum to pounce on the Bulldogs.
Allan Hancock recorded just three shots in the game compared to a whopping 29 for the Lady Cougars. COC earned five corner kicks, surrendering just one to the Bulldogs.
COC goalkeeper Ana Spross had two saves in the game to preserve the clean sheet, her third of the season.
Gracell Magnaye got the party started with an unassisted goal in the 12th minute to put the game at 1-0.
Corina Sagato was next to find the back of the net, with a header that came via a beautiful corner kick from sophomore Crystal Sanchez in the 21st minute. Sagato scored again less than two minutes later to put Canyons ahead 3-0 heading into halftime.
Kathleen Volpei didn't waste any team extending COC's lead in the second half, as the freshman created some space and sailed one past the AHC goalkeeper just 14 seconds into the new period.
Canyons continued to score at a frenzied pace with Sanchez adding a goal of her own in the 48th minute then coming back with another in the 56th. Both scores were assisted by Alondra Solis.
Solis was next to get in on the action with a goal in the 58th minute on an assist from Dani Yanez. Solis then put a second score past the AHC goalie in the 78th minute, this time via an assist from Sarah Wong.
COC will now begin conference play with a home match vs. Antelope Valley College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Canyons has won seven straight conference titles dating back to 2011.
