WALNUT, Calif. — Freshman Lesly Cabrera netted a goal in the 86th minute to force the match into overtime, but it wasn't enough as College of the Canyons dropped its opening round playoff match 2-1 to host Mt. San Antonio College.
No. 17 seed Canyons (12-6-4) played a scoreless first half as freshman goalkeeper Aaliyah Lopez and the Cougars' backline combined to keep the Mounties at bay. Lopez finished the game with five saves.
In the 54th minute, Mt. SAC (14-6-2) forward Jacquelynn Coronado broke the tie with goal assisted by Liani Sanchez to make it 1-0.
That's where things stayed until Andrea Marrufo was able to find an open Cabrera who booted the equalizer and gave Canyons new life by forcing an overtime period.
Mt. SAC wasted little time in reclaiming the lead, however, with Sanchez converting on an unassisted goal to make it a 2-1 game mere moments after the overtime period started.
The two teams played out two 15-minute overtime periods but Canyons could get no closer.
No. 16 Mt. SAC advancea to take on No. 1 Cypress College (17-0-3) in the next round of the SoCal Regional Playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 23.
Canyons has now advanced to the postseason in nine consecutive seasons. The Cougars were undefeated in their final eight regular season matches to place third in the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division. The Cougars led the entire WSC with 62 goals.
