College of the Canyons tied the match in the 6th minute at 1-1 with a goal by freshman Rebekah Brooks, but was not able to convert again as the Cougars lost a high-scoring affair to Chaffey College by a 5-1 final score.
Canyons (1-1) appeared poised to exchange goals with the Panthers (3-1) in the opening half.
Chaffey freshman Serenity DeLaTorre was able to boot one past the Canyons keeper during the 5th minute to get the action started. But Brooks, who was assisted by Lauryn Bailey, answered right back with the equalizer. The goal was the second of the season for Brooks.
The Panthers regained the lead at 2-1 in the 9th minute on the first of three goals from Chaffey freshman Kayla Bergin.
Bergin's second score of the half, came in the 23rd minute and put the score at 3-1 for the Panthers' side.
Canyons surrendered two more goals in the second half, and despite putting together some quality scoring opportunities on the attack, were not able to get back on the board.
COC goalkeeper Zoe MacDonald (1-1) was charged with the loss. She recorded four saves in the game.
