Freshman Lauryn Bailey scored two first half goals and Rebekah Brooks added the late exclamation point, as the Cougars controlled visiting No. 19 Cuesta College throughout Friday's match for a 3-0 home victory which represented the 150th of COC head coach Justin Lundin's career.
Canyons (3-0) scored in the 20th minute when Lauryn Bailey was able to beat the Cuesta keeper off an assist from Janelle Cornelio.
Bailey and Cornelio would team up again for the Cougars' second goal, this one coming right before the halftime whistle in the 45th minute of play.
Canyons took the 2-0 cushion into halftime, aided by a Cougar defense that allowed a single Cuesta shot on goal.
COC goalkeeper Zoe MacDonald started in net and earned the win, with Kylie Yuzon finishing the game in net for the Cougars.
Cuesta (1-2), which entered the match ranked No. 19 in the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) poll, struggled to form an attack all game.
Meanwhile, the Cougars registered 18 shots on goal, including a game-high five from Brooks, to maintain pressure on Cuesta throughout.
Brooks finally found the back of the net in the 65th minute, good for her sixth goal of the season, to cap the scoring at 3-0.
Canyons has scored at least three goals in three of its four matches this season, having outscored opponents 12-6 during that span.
The victory moved Lundin's career record to 150-48-38 since taking over the COC women's program in 2009. Lundin has also won seven Western State Conference (WSC) titles (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017) during that time. COC did not compete in 2020 due to cancelations brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Canyons is back in action, Tuesday, Sept. 21 vs. San Bernardino Valley College. That match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
