In a match that appeared to have the makings of a scoreless draw, College of the Canyons fought to score a pair of late goals and defeat visiting Santa Monica College by a 2-1 final on Tuesday.
Canyons (5-3-1, 2-0-1) and Santa Monica (2-5-1, 1-1) went back and forth the entire match, with each team earning several opportunities across both halves. It wasn't until the final 15 minutes when the goal scoring began.
COC freshman Analise Rappe kickstarted the momentum by hammering a ball into the back of the net in the 75th minute. The score was Rappe's third goal in the last two games.
Four minutes later, the Corsairs were right back in it with a finish from Cassie Velasquez off a corner kick, bringing the score to 1-1.
However, after the restart and in the same 79th minute Canyons answered right back.
With an assist from Maggie Maldonado, Rebekah Brooks beat the SMC backline and calmly placed the ball past Corsairs' goalkeeper Yosemite Cruz, to put the Cougars back in the lead. Brooks has recorded seven goals this season.
Santa Monica had one last attempt to tie it up with a shot in the 85th minute, but was shut down by the Cougars' goalkeeper Kylie Yuzon (1-2-1). Yuzon played a full 90 minutes recording six saves and picking up the win.
The Cougars are now 2-0-1 in Western State Conference (WSC) play this season having won back-to-back matches. COC next travels to L.A. Valley College (2-7-1, 0-2) to face the Monarchs at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8.
