MOORPARK — Goals from Alyssa Edwards and Ashley Striegel propelled College of the Canyons to a 2-1 road victory at Moorpark College on Tuesday, its second straight to begin the young season.
Canyons (2-0) played a scoreless opening half before Alyssa Edwards found her scoring touch in the 48th minute.
Moorpark (1-2) did its best to stay in the game, eventually earning an equalizer off the foot of Hannah Runyan in the 68th minute to get the game even again at 1-1.
However, the host Raiders simply couldn't keep pace with the Canyons attack. COC tallied 17 shots in the game with 12 coming on goal. Edwards was behind five of those attempts.
Striegel was next with two, including her game-winner in the 70th minute that moved Canyons back ahead at 2-1. The freshman out of Saugus High School has now scored in back-to-back games to begin the season.
COC goalkeeper Annabella Gonzales (1-0) logged the first start of her Cougar career, ending the day with a pair of saves to get the win.
Canyons will now have an opportunity to prepare for its 2023 home opener vs. top-ranked Chaffey College on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The two sides last meet in the third round of the 2022 Southern California Regional Playoffs, with Chaffey taking a 2-0 result in double overtime.
