College of the Canyons fell by a 1-0 result to visiting Chaffey College in its 2023 home openr Wednesday.
The lone goal of the game came in the 35th minute on a long free kick from freshman defender Nyomi Rivas that got over the head of Canyons goalkeeper Hazel Saucedo (1-1).
That goal-scoring sequence from Chaffey followed an opening segment of the game in which Canyons controlled the tempo and had some early chances.
In the sixth minute COC sophomore Lizeth Gutierrez had a hard shot blocked by a Panthers defender. Two minutes later it was freshman Alyssa Edwards with a shot on goal to give Chaffey goalkeeper Jessica Collins (4-0) her first action of the match.
In the 18th minute Ryan Shepherd found enough space to make a run, which led to a another shot off the foot of Edwards, this one sailing high.
COC finished with seven shots in the game, five in the first half. Chaffey had 14 for the match with an 8-2 advantage down the stretch.
Canyons freshman Annabella Gonzales played the second half in goal and finished with four saves.
COC (2-1) and Chaffey (4-0) had last met in the third round of the 2022 CCCAA SoCal Regional playoffs, a match the Lady Cougars lost 2-0.
