College of the Canyons netted three goals in the opening half to right the ship and snap a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over San Bernardino Valley College on Friday night.
Canyons (3-3) dominated possession and ended the night with 18 shots compared to just six from the Wolverines (1-4-1). COC also earned seven corner kicks compared to three for SBVC
COC sophomore Gisselle Gomez scored in the 19th minute off a feed from Felicia Marquez and the Lady Cougars were in business at 1-0
Early in the 24th minute it was Natalia Zuluaga Ramirez extending the advantage at 2-0, this time with Jessie Bonsness credited with the assist.
Sophomore Ryan Shepherd put the exclamation point on things with her scoring touch in the 33rd minute. Lizeth Gutierrez put the scoring sequence in motion with her assist.
SBVC got back into the game at 3-1, with Danira Valenzuela beat Canyons goalkeeper Annabella Gonzales for the Wolverines' lone goal.
Gonzales (2-0) played the first half and recorded two key saves to earn the win. Hazel Saucedo finished the match and was credited with a save.
Both sides had their opportunities in the second half but neither managed to get another scoring play, making for a 3-1 final.
Canyons is back in action Tuesday, Sept. 19 at Santa Barbara City College in the final non-conference match of the season.
