College of the Canyons established its tone for the start of the conference schedule with an eventful 9-0 victory over L.A. Valley College on Tuesday.
Canyons (4-3-1, 1-0) played an intense early season schedule which prepped the Cougars for Western State Conference (WSC), South Division play, as the Lady Cougars contested with three teams ranked in the top five of the 3C2A polls.
COC sophomore Ryan Shepherd kicked off the action in the second minute of the game sparking a goal-scoring frenzy from six different players.
It wasn't long after Shepherd's first goal that sophomore Lizeth Gutierrez made her run down the left side to put it past LAVC goalkeeper Sarah Paul in the eighth minute.
Gutierrez and Shepherd both found the net a second time, in the 11th and 13th minute, to put the Cougars up 4-0.
Three more goals were posted by the end of the second half coming from Kiana Madera in the 30th minute, then Natalia Zuluaga Ramirez four minutes after and Ashley Striegel with the seventh score in the 43rd.
Canyons sophomore goalkeeper Hazel Saucedo (2-3) stood in net for the first half and eventually earned the win, before freshman Annabella Gonzales finished the second half.
With a 7-0 lead going into halftime, the Cougars worked through the lineup and put up two more goals.
Sophomore Sarah Allen found her stride, putting away the eighth goal of the match in the 48th minute and then topping it off at 9-0 in the 53rd minute.
Saucedo and Gonzales both worked for two saves each, while Paul recorded a total of six saves on Canyons 16 total shots.
The Cougars are on the road for their second conference match vs. Glendale College on Friday, Sept. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
