Late Goal from Edwards Gets Canyons Even 1-1 vs. Citrus
By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director
College of the Canyons remained scoreless for nearly the full 90 minutes until Alyssa Edwards put a stoppage time touch on a ball that got the Lady Cougars even at 1-1 to salvage a draw with visiting Citrus College and push its unbeaten streak to 14 games.
Canyons (13-3-3, 10-0-2) nearly tasted defeat in what would have been the squad's first loss since Sept. 12. Instead, it was COC finding a way to win and maintaining its place at the top of the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division standings.
Edwards' goal came after the sophomore was able to get position, then manage a touch with her back to the net on a ball that eventually got past Citrus goalkeeper Maddy Moris and lifted the COC fans and supporters in attendance. The goal was her 10th of the season, tied for the team lead.
Citrus (9-4-5, 7-1-4) had scored first in the 11th minute on a goal from Jayme Beatty then maintained that position until the Edwards heroics. On at least three occasions in the opening half Moris and the Owls' backline combined to stifle COC scoring opportunities.
Hazel Saucedo (7-3-2) recorded a save in earning the draw. The sophomore has logged eight starts on the Lady Cougars' current streak with a 6-0-2 record during that span.
Canyons will now look to close out the regular season with two important matches.
First, COC travels to Antelope Valley College (13-3-3, 8-1-3) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7.
The Lady Cougars then host Santa Monica College (10-3-6, 9-1-2) in the regular season finale at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10
AVC begins the week as the conference's third place team with Santa Monica in the runner-up position, both chasing Canyons.
