Canyons Falls 2-1 in Season Opener

VENTURA — College of the Canyons posted a spirited second-half effort that included a goal from sophomore Victoria Martinez, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars were downed 2-1 at Ventura College in the season opener on Friday.
Martinez put Canyons on the board in the 59th minute with a scoring strike that came after touches from Bailey Williamson and Ashley Striegel. Both were credited with assists on the play.
The goal by Martinez sparked a notable push for Canyons across the final 30 minutes of play.
Moments late COC goalkeeper Hayley Bench come up with a PK save to keep her side in contention at 2-1.
Ventura (1-0) had built an early lead with an early goal off the leg of Lex Sahagian and just past Canyons keeper Amanda Hurlimann (0-1) in the ninth minute.
The Pirates took the 1-0 advantage into halftime then extended their advantage at 2-0 when Yaraby Herrera was able to beat Bench, who began the second half in goal for COC.
Canyons (0-1) had its share of opportunities down the stretch but couldn't capitalize again.
Up next, the Cougars take a trip south for matches vs. San Diego Miramar (1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27) and San Diego Mesa College (3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29)
COC will then host Fullerton College at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 in the Cougars' home opener. That game is being broadcast live to fans free of charge via the Cougars Sports Network.
