Canyons Opens Conference Play With Another Victory
Lauren Underwood, Brooke Garelick & Serena LeDuff lead the COC attack
The No. 18 state-ranked College of the Canyons volleyball team (10-3) killed two birds with one stone on Friday, extending its winning streak to five games while picking up its first conference win in the process, triumphing 3-0 over visiting West L.A. College (25-10, 25-10. 25-29) in the team's Western State Conference (WSC) opener.
Canyons has won its last five matches by a score of 3-0, and is now 9-1 over its last 10 contests dating back to Sept. 12.
On Friday, sophomore standout Serena LeDuff led the COC attack with 11 kills and 11 digs. LeDuff has now amassed 63.5 points during COC's current hot streak.
Sophomore Lauren Underwood registered 7 kills on 10 total attacks for a team-high .700 kill percentage, while freshman outside hitter Brooke Garelick registered eight kills and three aces for 12 total points. Freshman Erica Magee and Amanda Plante contributed six and five kills, respectively.
Freshman setter Katie Rutecki also played well for the Cougars, tallying 20 assists and five digs to go along with five aces of her own. Rutecki now has an impressive 348 assists through the first 12 matches and leads COC with 17 aces.
Setter Taylor Kasha also turned in a strong performance with 13 assists and an ace.
Canyons will next face Citrus College on the road at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8.
