Canyons Splits Matches at MiraCosta Classic
COC (2-2) picked up an opening round win vs. College of the Desert before seeing an early slip to host MiraCosta.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — College of the Canyons split its two matchs at the annual MiraCosta College Classic on Friday, first downing College of the Desert before eventually falling to host MiraCosta in five sets.
Canyons (2-2) put together a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 25-20) victory over Desert behind standout performances from freshman Bree Kelley and sophomore Grace Ferguson who each recorded 14 kills in the contest. Ferguson also added a combined five blocks and four digs.
Freshman Tyler Dobrowsky finished with nine kills, six digs and two block assists, while Kyra Titner turned in seven kills of her own.
Caitlin Lim ended the match with five aces to lead a Canyons team that finished with 14.
Elizabeth Gannon contributed with four aces, 18 digs and three assists, while Sydney Higginson checked in with 48 assists, two aces, five kills and two block assists.
COC's afternoon match saw the Cougars jump out to a 2-0 lead before going the full five sets with a Spartans squad that eventually was able to emerge with a 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 29-27, 25-21, 15-10) victory.
Once again, Ferguson (13) and Kelley (11) led Canyons in kills. Madison Martinez chipped in with seven kills and a combined three blocks and Gannon upped her totals from the previous game with 22 digs.
Kayla Tait was a force behind the line with five aces to go with four kills and 15 digs.
However, Canyons committed 31 errors in the match compared to just 21 from the Spartans. MiraCosta also hit at a .289 clip compared to a mark of .089 from Canyons.
COC next travels to Santa Barbara City College at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11.
