College of the Canyons recorded nine total blocks and 16 aces, including 10 from sophomore Sydney Higginson, helping Canyons cruise to a 3-0 conference victory over visiting Citrus College on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-9, 25-16, 25-10.
Higginson took the opening serve and didn't give it up until Canyons (12-7, 7-2) built a 12-0 lead and forced a Citrus timeout. Higginson recorded five aces in that span before the Owls finally got on the board. She is now tied with teammate Elizabeth Gannon for the Western State Conference (WSC) lead with 49 aces.
With the opening set score hovering at 23-9, Higginson returned to the back line for another pair of back-to-back aces that promptly sent the match into its second frame.
Citrus (7-15, 4-4) kept things close in the second set, and even briefly held a slight advantage, but the Canyons attack was too much for the Owls.
As she has done for the majority of the season, sophomore Grace Ferguson led the team with eight kills on 10 attacks.
Kyra Titner and Kayla Tait both added five kills. Higginson was involved throughout the contest with 20 assists and five digs. Gannon recorded five aces and nine digs.
The Cougars closed out the final set 25-10 to win its third straight contest, and eighth in the last nine games.
Despite that recent string of success, Canyons has fallen out of the California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association (CCCWVCA) statewide rankings after having been ranked within the Top-25 for every poll since mid-September.
Canyons has just four regular season games remaining on the docket, including a home tilt vs. Glendale College at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. Prior to the game, COC will honor the team's five dedicated sophomores for their contributions to the program during a special 'Sophomore Night' ceremony.
COC will then close out the 2019 regular season with a road meting vs. Citrus on Nov. 6, before the season finale at Santa Monica College on Friday, Nov. 8.
