Women's Volleyball Sweeps Long Beach For First Win

LONG BEACH — College of the Canyons secured its first victory of the season on Wednesday, traveling south and returning home with a convincing 3-0 victory over Long Beach City College. Set scores were 25-13, 25-14, 25-21. 

Canyons (1-1) hit a combined .303 for the match compared to a mark of .053 for the Vikings (0-3).

Long Beach also committed 21 hitting errors, with seven more from the backline, to help the Cougars get the straight sets win. 

The Cougars hit .474 in the opening frame with 11 kills on 19 total attacks, helping to set the tone for the remainder of the match. Canyons added an exclamation point with 17 kills in the final set. 

Long Beach did not top the 15-point plateau until the third set but did manage to hang with Canyons before an eventual 25-21 Cougars' win that gave way to the COC sweep.

Canyons recorded seven aces in the contest and combined for 11 blocks, to go with 28 digs, with the entire Cougars' roster seeing action in the match.

Upcoming Schedule

COC is back in action Friday, Sept. 2, for a doubleheader hosted by El Camino College. The Cougars will take on the host Warriors at 11 a.m. then return to the court for a 1:30 p.m. scheduled neutral-court match vs. Grossmont College.

Canyons will then host Santa Barbara City College in their 2022 home opener at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7 in the Cougar Cage. That match will be live streamed to fans free of charge via YouTube on the Cougars Sports Network.
