Canyons Wins Second Straight, 3-2 at Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA — College of the Canyons took down host Santa Barbara City College in a five-set road battle on Friday to win its second straight match. Set scores were 11-25,25-22,25-10,17-25, 15-11.
Canyons (4-5) dropped the first set but rallied to take the second and third rounds. Santa Barbara (5-7) pushed through to send the match to a fifth set where Canyons triumphed over the Vaqueros with four points to spare.
Sutton Thompson set the precedent on the court with three aces, 11 digs and 18 assists. Jaylyn Zavala supported with 12 assists of her own.
Kaitlyn Vazin commanded 11 points on the night with four kills and seven aces, while working to support Canyons defensively with 15 digs.
Also defending for the Cougars, Presley Golphenee recorded an impressive 29 digs to keep Canyons in the fight.
Sophomore Kamia Benjamin and freshman Naomi Greer worked together at the net recording five blocks each.
The Cougars finished the night with a total of 41 kills. Greer was responsible for eight of those followed by Leah Gillie, Kaireese Johnson and Kyla Dothard each with seven.
COC, which previously defeated College of the Desert on Sept. 13, will now look to extend their win streak vs. No. 23 Moorpark College on Wednesday, Sept. 20 in the Cougar Cage. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
