Canyons Gets Conference Win at Antelope Valley

LANCASTER — College of the Canyons got back on track picking up a road win after taking down Antelope Valley College 3-1 on Friday night. Set scores were 13-25, 23-25, 25-22, 13-25 in favor of the Lady Cougars.  

Canyons (6-9, 2-2) took the first set with ease before the Marauders put up a fight barely losing the second set.   

AVC (3-7, 0-3) continued its momentum into the third set where they managed to beat the Cougars by three points sending the match to a fourth set. 

However, the Cougars were quick to squash their momentum closing out the fourth set with a 12-point surplus.  

COC freshman Kyla Dothard led the Cougars with 12 kills and one ace, working for 13 points on the match.  

Kamia Benjamin and Ana Vasquez were right behind with eight kills each. 

Benjamin was credited with a solo block along with a block assist, finishing the night with 10 points. 

COC Freshman Leah Gillie also worked for 10 points on the night coming from three kills and five aces. She also recorded one assist, one dig, one solo block and two block assists. 

Canyons libero, Presley Golphenee continued her defensive reign, registering 19 digs. Dothard recorded the second highest of the night with seven. 

Freshmen setter Jaylyn Zavala claimed 18 assists, one kill, two aces and a dig with fellow teammate and setter Sutton Thompson working for 12 assists of her own, two aces and just as many digs.  

Canyons continues its work in the Western State Conference, South Division at the Cougar Cage on Wednesday, Oct. 11 vs. Citrus College. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
