Lady Cougars Sweep West L.A. on Sophomore Night

College of the Canyons closed out its conference schedule with a decisive 3-0 victory over West L.A. College on 'Sophomore Night' at the Cougar Cage on Wednesday. Set scores were 25-21, 25-7, 25-14.

Canyons (11-12, 7-5) has now won two of its final three matches to finish the regular season third in the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division. 

West L.A. (5-16, 1-11) managed to keep pace with COC through the opening set before the Lady Cougars got into full gear.

Kyla Dothard led Canyons with eight kills and Ana Vasquez was next with six. Priscilla Miranda and Kira Hooper each ended with five kills, while Kaireese Johnson and Kamia Benjamin finished the night with four apiece. 

Vasquez led all hitters with a .545 mark as part of the team's combined .289 hitting percentage for the match.

Madison Gomez served up five aces, with Sutton Thompson and Hooper each adding to the scoring with three aces each. Jaylyn Zavala added two more to help bring the team total to 15. Gomez also chipped in with a team-high 16 digs. Presley Golphenee was next with nine and Hooper followed with eight. 

Hooper and Celeste Anaya both recorded solo blocks, while Leah Gillie tallied ive block assists. Dothard also had three block assists for a team-high 9.5 points.

Canyons will play a final regular season match Tuesday, Nov. 14 in the Cougar Cage as part of the annual WSC crossover event. The host Cougars take on visiting Santa Barbara City College beginning at 6 p.m.
