COC women's cross country team finishes in conference’s second spot
The COC men's cross country team claimed its second Western State Conference (WSC) championship in as many years, as the Cougars turned in a gutsy effort to narrowly outlast Cuesta College 41-42 at last Friday's WSC Finals at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura. The COC women's cross country team finished in the conference's second spot behind eventual champion Glendale College after being edged out 14-19.
On the men's side, sophomore Grant Stromberg turned in his best performance of the season finishing second in the field of 132 with a time of 21:47 on the four-mile, hill-filled course. Sophomore Robert Pion crossed the finish line in third place at 22:02.
Sophomore Rodrigo Ornelas took the fifth spot at 22:05 and Ashton Garcia placed eighth at 22:28. Freshman Zach Strader finished in 23rd to round out COC's top-five.
For the women freshman Shalyn Mabritto continued her strong season with a time of 20:39 to finish in fourth place on the 5K course.
Sophomore Dominique Dowell and freshman Amanda DeJesus finished a mere second apart with respective times of 21:10 (seventh place) and 21:11 (eighth place). Rounding out the Canyons front five were freshman Lizeth Flores' time of 21:16 and Alexandra Whitman's mark of 21:31.
