Canyons Cross Country Teams Perform Well at WSC Preview
The men's team wins the event, while the women's takes second place.
The College of the Canyons cross country program performed well at Monday's Western State Conference (WSC) Preview hosted by Oxnard College, with the men's team finishing in first place and the women's squad taking home second place.
The men's team put together a score of 41, just edging out Glendale College at 42 points. Cuesta College was a distant third place at 120 points on the four-mile course.
The Cougars had three men finish in the top ten, led by freshman Alejandro Bernal's third place time of 20:42.8.
COC sophomore Jason Hillquist finished just behind Bernal in fourth place with a time of 20:43.4. Finishing seventh overall was sophomore Joseph Rosales with a time of 20:48.9.
The COC women's team finished second overall with a score of 41 behind meet winner Glendale College's mark of 20 points. Citrus College took third place at 120.
COC had four runners finish in the top ten, led by freshman Jessica Ruiz who finished third overall with a time of 18:47.3 on the 5K course.
Canyons sophomore Alexandra Whitman ran for a time of 18:53.9 that placed her in fifth.
Rounding out the top ten were COC sophomore Amanda De Jesus (19:22.9) and freshman Chelsea Wells (19:28.7) who finished ninth and tenth, respectively.
Canyons will next compete in the Santa Barbara Invitational on Friday Oct. 9, at Shoreline Park.
