OXNARD — Freshman sensation Danielle Salcedo won the 5K women's race for the third time in as many weeks, running to a course record time of 18:08.6, as College of the Canyons took second in the team standing at the Oxnard College Invitational on Friday.
Salcedo's first place run, coming at an average pace of 5:50.4 per mile, was nearly a minute faster than runner-up Brianna King (19:09.1) of Chaffey College.
Friday's meet continued the scorching start to Salcedo's Cougar career which has also included times of 18:47.8 (Week 1/Moorpark Invitational/Arroyo Vista Park) and 18:58.1 (Week 2/ Canyons Invitational/Valencia Campus).
COC freshman Milca Osorio was impressive with her season-best time of 19:53, good for fourth place, also coming on the course at Oxnard. Osorio has finished no worse than sixth in any event this year and continues to be a key component to the Cougars' success.
Sophomore Sarah Zamudio turned in a time of 21:13.6 to finish 23rd in the field of 56 runners coming from 11 schools, in addition to several unattached runners.
Freshmen Jennifer Thompson (29th/22:33.7) and Trinity Winslow (32nd/22:59.7) both scored for Canyons. Maylani Perez (34th/23:08.1) also competed but was not included in the final tally.
Canyons (64) trailed only Mt. San Antonio College (27) in the team standings. Moorpark College (71) slotted into third and Bakersfield College (96) was fourth with host Oxnard (104) rounding things out.
COC's men's team did not factor into the team scoring but saw three runners compete on Friday. Alejandro Chavez (77th/26:32.2), Vinne Fatta (83rd/27:31.7) and Chanchoi Krasaesin all ran hard on the four-mile course for the Cougars' understaffed pack.
Mt. SAC (17) also won the men's race to sweep the meet. Moorpark (52) was second followed by Bakersfield (75) in third.
