MOORPARK — College of the Canyons finished second in the team standings and freshman Danielle Salcedo ran to her fourth victory of the year at the Western State Conference (WSC) Preview at Arroyo Vista Park.
The annual preview meet represents the official halfway point of the Cougars' season and also afforded COC an opportunity to measure itself against competition from across the WSC.
Salcedo's time of 18:55 was better than 12 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. She averaged a pace of roughly 5:55 per mile to win for the second time this season on the 5K course at Arroyo Vista.
Undefeated in community college events this year, Salcedo also ran to victory at the season-opening Moorpark College Invitational held at the same location back on Aug. 27.
COC freshman Milca Osorio finished the event fifth overall at a time of 20:08.9 to help bolster the Canyons result. Osorio has been a consistent competitor the Cougars all season long, having finished no worse than sixth at all four community college events she has run.
Canyons sophomore Sarah Zamudio was third to score for the Cougars with her run of 22:26.3, good for 24th overall in the 53 competitors.
Trinity Winslow has not far off that pace, finishing 26th overall at a time of 23:14.8. Winslow's time at the WSC Preview event was nearly 80 seconds faster than her performance at the same course back in August.
Maylani Perez rounded out the Canyons scores with her time of 24:16.5, good for 32nd in the individual standings.
COC sophomore Diana Perez, competing in just her second meet of the season, ran to a time of 25:43.1 to place 39th overall. Her time did not factor into the final scoring for the Cougars.
Those scoring marks put Canyons at 77 event points to trail first place Glendale College (30).
Cuesta College (82) was third followed by event host Moorpark College (85), Bakersfield College (93) and Oxnard College (110).

Canyons will now have a week off of competition before returning to action at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational on Friday, Oct. 15.
The WSC Championship meet is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 22, at Legg Lake Recreational Area.
