WALNUT — College of the Canyons placed third in the women's team standings at the annual Mt. San Antonio College (SAC) Invite and freshman Danielle Salcedo won her fifth straight community college event to help guide the Cougars.
Salcedo, who was recently named the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) State Athlete of the Month for September, continues to be undefeated in community college events this season.
Salcedo turned in a time of 18:26.3 on the 5K women's course to easily win the event. Hannah Brown of Mt. SAC finished second overall at a time of 19:08.7.
Trinity Winslow also scored for Canyons, with the freshman taking 43rd overall at 23:32.8. Winslow was followed by sophomore Diana Perez in 46th place at a pace of 23:57.4. Perez was running in just her third event of the season.
Freshman Maylani Perez (50th/24:43.2) also competed in the event but fell just short of the final scoring mark.
Meet host Mt. SAC won the women's event with a score of 31 after seeing all five scoring runners place in the top-12. Hartnell College (41) slotted into second place with Canyons (91) in third place.
Glendale College (101), Long Beach City College (133) and El Camino College (145) rounded out the field of competing schools.
Canyons will next compete at the WSC Championships being held Friday, Oct. 22, at Legg Lake Park in South El Monte. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
COC previously ran to a second-place team finish at the WSC Preview meet back on Oct. 1, with Salcedo winning the event outright.
The Cougars will be gunning for the women's cross country program's first WSC championship.
